Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Kegalla.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was first established in 1975 on a land of nine Hectares with 07 Orphan Elephants. Soon it became a Conservation and education centre with the help of local and foreign elephant experts and gradually commenced a scientific captive breeding program for elephants. The first baby of Pinnawala was born in 1984. At the time the herd comprised 32 Elephants. Up to end 2002 they have breed 23 babies at Pinnawla Elephant Orphanage. At present it is home to more than 60 elephants which has become a tourist paradise of foreigners, nature lovers and entertainers.

How to get there,

By road - Approximately 10Km from Kegalle town on the Colombo Kandy main road. Route no. A1 turn off near the 82 Km post.
By train – Nearest railway station is Rambukkana on the main lone. 2Km from Rambukkana Station.
